Bora Bora Sharks and Stingrays

Bora Bora
French Polynesia
March 23, 2019
Day 1
Thousands of people are drawn to Bora Bora every year because it is one of the most beautiful islands on earth and we were lucky enough to be able to spend two days there. Day 1 we planned on snorkeling with the sharks and stingrays tour. Day 2 we would tour the island.
Once again the Eurodam had to anchor outside the port and people would take a tender to shore.
We boarded our tour boat and were serenaded and entertained by the crew while we sailed to our first snorkel destination.
Our journey went past the famous Matu Tapu island (known for its beauty and over the water bungalows).

When we arrived at our destination, other snorkeling tours had beaten us there. Quite shallow water as one can tell.
On the horizon you can see the waves breaking on the reef which protects the inner islands. These reefs are what make the lagoons a snorkeling paradise. I was afraid my little point and shoot camera might have lost its water proof feature so no pictures of the ridiculously beautiful reef fish.
When you spotted people starting to bunch up, it generally meant the sharks and stingrays were close by.
The black-tipped reef sharks were fast (see upper part of picture). Hard to get a good picture.
Sharks living in the island's lagoon are not considered to be dangerous to people. Tell that to one of our other passengers. The story that went around the ship was that he was sitting on the boat's stairs dangling his feet in the water. ( ? ) And a shark came by and took a little taste. Said to have taken 27 stitches. Well, anyway that was the gossip mill.
The stingrays of which I did not get a picture (so I used some internet pictures) were tamer than the sharks and would swim very closely to you. See the mouth? As the snorkel guide would feed them they would open their mouths wide to gobble up as much as possible.
I found that the edges of their body felt like sandpaper and towards the middle slick--almost slimy. We were told not to touch them on their underside as they will feel threatened. Quite likely as the eyes are on top of the body.
With the excitement of the day over, it was time to take a picturesque trip back to--

Home sweet home
