Taiohae, Nuku Hiva Part 4 Te A'itua And Hooumi

 Te A'itua Welcoming Committee
Taiohae, Nuku Hiva
March 30, 2019
The Te A'itua Temple is a reconstructed ancient temple used for the Marquesan Arts Festival.
The Marquesan Arts Festival is held every 4 years.

As mentioned in a previous article, the islanders feared the disappearance of their culture and customs. The festival encourages its youth to approach the Tuhuka (wise men) of the islands to be trained in the ancient traditions and cultures of the islands. The children above are off to a good start although their task this particular day was to welcome visitors and entice them into the foyer as local goods are sold by vendors there.

The festival rotates among the islands of Ua Pou, Nuku Hiva, and Hiva Oa.

Mini-festivals are held on smaller islands every two years.
Beautiful grounds and surroundings.
We start loading into our transports to go to the next location
Hooumi Bay
Briefing us about Hooumi Bay. Our guide told us that some of the drivers asked him why they stopped there and his answer was "Because it is beautiful." Difference between resident and visitor. We agreed with the guide.

Back to our transport vehicles and the winding roads. The trip back to port had some additional nice scenery.

Getting close to the pier.
And what was awaiting us at the pier? Christine's friends, of course, and she had her camera ready.

We tender back to the ship.
Back aboard ship and ready for a spectacular departure.

Beckoning to me but there are still too many island shore scenes.

Alas, we sail off into the sunset and head toward home.
