Taiohae, Nuku Hiva Part 3 Taipivai Valley

Taipivai Valley

To get to our next stops of the tour, we were placed in a pickup or van. It seemed that everyone on the island that had such a vehicle participated in the tour, not as tour guides, as most did not speak English, but as our drivers.

The "Taipivai Valley" stop really was looking down on the valley from a mountain top. To get to the top was interesting as there were many hairpin turns.

Each vehicle carried four passengers. Luckily I sat by a window and could try to take photos as we journeyed up the mountain.

After a briefing, our guide turned us loose to enjoy the scenery and to take our pictures. Of course, no briefing would be complete without mentioning that the Taipivai valley was the backdrop for Herman Melville's first and some say greatest book, Typee. Melville deserted an American whaler in 1842 and hid at Taipivai valley. (I have not finished the book yet so can't give a summary).

Christine taking in the outstanding scenery.

All too soon, time to go to the next stop, Te A'itua temple.
